To Your Knowledge
Erythrina variegata, prized for its ornamental beauty, is cultivated in various forms, including the ‘Alba’ cultivar boasting white flowers. In Vietnam, its leaves serve as wrappings for fermented meat, known as “nem.” Across the Philippines, it goes by the name dapdap, utilized in traditional medicine for its bark and leaves. Moreover, E. variegata finds purpose in agroforestry systems, offering valuable fodder with high nutritional content for livestock. While its seeds are toxic when raw, they become edible after cooking. Additionally, both the bark and seeds historically served as a means to stun fish for easier capture. Notably, the Formosan aboriginal Puyuma tribe craft mortars called taurs from the tree’s trunk, essential for pounding sticky rice prior to steaming.
